How to Change Login Screen Background in Ubuntu
Here are the steps to change login screen background in Ubuntu. We will be changing settings of GDM3, the default display manager of GNOME desktop, to change login screen background.
1. Install Required Tools
Open terminal and run the following command to install required tools.
$ sudo apt install libglib2.0-dev-bin
There are many third-party scripts to help you easily change login screen background. We will download one such script from GitHub.
$ wget -qO - https://github.com/PRATAP-KUMAR/ubuntu-gdm-set-background/archive/main.tar.gz | tar zx --strip-components=1 ubuntu-gdm-set-background-main/ubuntu-gdm-set-background
To know more about the downloaded file, run the following command.
$ ./ubuntu-gdm-set-background --help
2. Change Login Screen Background
You can set an image, solid color, horizontal color gradient, or vertical color gradient as login screen background. Here are the specific commands for each use case.
Set Image as background
Here is the command to set background as image file, using –image option followed by file path of image.
$ sudo ./ubuntu-gdm-set-background --image /home/user/backgrounds/image.jpg
Set solid color as background
Here is the command to set login screen background as solid color. In this case, we use –color option followed by hex code for the solid color.
$ sudo ./ubuntu-gdm-set-background --color \#aAbBcC
Set horizontal color gradient
Here is the command to set horizontal color gradient as login screen background. In this case, we use –gradient option followed by ‘horizontal’ keyword, followed by the hex codes of 2 colors to be used for horizontal gradient.
$ sudo ./ubuntu-gdm-set-background --gradient horizontal \#aAbBcC \#dDeEfF
Set Vertical color gradient
Here is the command to set vertical color gradient as login screen background. In this case, we use –gradient option followed by ‘vertical’ keyword, followed by the hex codes of 2 colors to be used for vertical gradient.
$ sudo ./ubuntu-gdm-set-background --gradient vertical \#aAbBcC \#dDeEfF
Reset All Changes
Here is the command to reset all changes made using above commands.
$ sudo ./ubuntu-gdm-set-background --reset
