WordPress is a popular blogging and content management system, used by many people and organizations around the world. It is essential to regularly backup WordPress so that you can easily recover it in case of issues. A backup is also useful in case your website is hacked, or some plugin malfunctions or website crashes. There are various places to store your WordPress site’s backup. In this article, we will learn how to backup WordPress to Google Drive.
How to Backup WordPress to Google Drive
For our purpose, you need to have WordPress Admin credentials and access to your Google Account. Although it is possible to write PHP code or other script to backup WordPress, we will use a third-party plugin UpdraftPlus for our requirement. In this case, it is easier to use a plugin that build a backup module from scratch.
1. Login to WordPress
Login to WordPress admin of your blog/website. On left side menu of Admin dashboard, you will see Plugins option. Click Add New under it.
2. Install UpdraftPlus
When you click the above mentioned button, you will see a gallery of plugins. Search for UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin and click Install to install it. Also Activate the plugin by clicking Activate button.
3. Configure UpdraftPlus Settings
Hover on Settings on left side menu and click UpdraftPlus Backups.
You will see a gallery of options to choose the location of your WordPress backup. UpdraftPlus supports many cloud services as remote location for WordPress backup. Click Google Drive from the list. You will see a popup window that requires to authenticate yourself with Google Account and complete the setup.
Once the setup is complete, you can backup WordPress website by clicking ‘Backup Now’ button in Current Status tab. You will see a progress bar with a timestamp. Once the backup is created it will be uploaded to Google Drive automatically.
You can restore the backup by clicking Restore button from Current Status tab.
