Canvas Ad is the newest Ad type by Facebook. It’s available only on mobiles. Canvas Ads allow you tell more engaging stories in your Ads by combining Images, Videos & Text.

At the outset, it looks like a single image or video ad, with an additional message saying “Tap to open”. However, when people tap on a canvas Ad, they’re taken to a full screen experience that allows them to interact with your brand’s content. They always have an option to exit anytime during the Canvas Ad.

Ad Unit

An Ad Unit is the part of your Canvas Ad that people see in their mobile news feed, before they tap to open it. You can use an image or a video for the Ad Unit. If you use an image, it will look like a single image ad with a “Tap to open” message. Else it will look like a video ad with the same message.   • Description: 30 characters
  • Image size: 1,200 x 628 pixels
  • Image ratio: 1.9:1

Photos

Canvas Photos are full screen photos that occupy at least full-screen width by default. They can be set to different sizing options. Here’s an example of how a canvas photo looks like.

  • Image Size – There are 3 image sizing options, each has its own Image Size specification
    • Fit to width (linkable): image width of 1,080 pixels
    • Fit to width (tap to expand): minimum image height of 1,080 pixels
    • Fit to height (tilt to pan): image height of 1,920 pixels. In this case if your image width is wider than the screen then users can tilt their phone to pan across the image from side to side.

Tilt-to-pan images

Tilt-to-pan feature allows you to upload images that are wider than screen, and people can tilt their phones to pan across the image from one side to another. This allows you to display full-height images in your Canvas ad. Here’s an example of tilt-to-pan images in canvas ad

  • Image height: 1,920 pixels
  • Image width: between 3,240 and 5,400 px (which is 3-5x the width of the screen)
  • Image ratio: Images use the full width of the screen by default
  • File type: .PNG and .JPG
  • Number of photos: up to 20 photos can be used in a Canvas

 

Video

Canvas video allows you to show short full-screen video clips as a part of your Facebook Ads, when users interact with your brand’s content.

  • Format: .MOV or .MP4 file type
  • Length: keep the collective run time of all videos in the Canvas under 2 minutes total
  • Resolution: at least 720p
  • Orientation: portrait (landscape-oriented videos will automatically resize to portrait)
  • Thumbnail: this will be the first frame of the video

Carousel

  • Image size: 1,080 pixels (maximum width) x 1,920 pixels (maximum height)
  • Image ratio: Images can be full or partial height, but all images should be the same size
  • File type: .PNG or .JPG

Ensure that all the images used in a carousel are of the same size, else they will be cropped to the size of your first image.

 

Text Block
