Facebook allows you to choose from 5 different types of Ads:

  1. Single Image : Create up to 6 variations of your advert using 1 image, at no extra cost.

The available ad types vary, depending on the marketing objective you’ve chosen. In some cases, even the Ad Specs & Sizes vary based on the marketing objective. For example, the Ad Specs for Facebook Carousel are different if you choose Brand Awareness Marketing objective, compared to those if you choose Store Visits as your objective

1. Facebook Single Image Ad Size & Specs

Single Image Ads are the most common Ads you see on Facebook. They are also the most versatile Ads allowing you to add Custom Call to Actions such as like, get offer, sign up, etc. Here’s what a Facebook Single Image Ad looks like:

  • Image size: 1,200 x 628 pixels
  • Image ratio: 1.9:1


  • Text: 90 characters
  • Headline: 25 characters
  • Link description: 30 characters

To have maximum impact, reduce Facebook Advertising Costs and get wider distribution, Facebook recommends to avoid using overlay text in images while creating Facebook Ads. It also recommends to keep minimal text in your Ads and focus more on adding high quality images.

5. Facebook Canvas Specs

Canvas Ad is the newest Ad type by Facebook. It’s available only on mobiles. Canvas Ads allow you tell more engaging stories in your Ads by combining Images, Videos & Text.

At the outset, it looks like a single image or video ad, with an additional message saying “Tap to open”. However, when people tap on a canvas Ad, they’re taken to a full screen experience that allows them to interact with your brand’s content. They always have an option to exit anytime during the Canvas Ad.

A canvas Ad is made of various Ad components, each having its own Ad Specs:

  • Ad unit
  • Photos
  • Tilt-to-pan images
  • Video
  • Carousel
  • Text block
  • Buttons
  • Header

You don’t need to use all the components in each Canvas Ad. However, you can combine elements to create an engaging user experience. Let’s look at each Ad Component’s specifications in detail

Ad Unit

An Ad Unit is the part of your Canvas Ad that people see in their mobile news feed, before they tap to open it. You can use an image or a video for the Ad Unit. If you use an image, it will look like a single image ad with a “Tap to open” message. Else it will look like a video ad with the same message.   • Text: 90 characters
  • Headline: 45 characters
  • Description: 30 characters
  • Image size: 1,200 x 628 pixels
  • Image ratio: 1.9:1
  • Video format: .MOV or .MP4 file types
  • Video aspect ratio: 16:9 or 1:1

Canvas Photos are full screen photos that occupy at least full-screen width by default. They can be set to different sizing options. Here’s an example of how a canvas photo looks like.

Here are the recommended Canvas Ad Photo specs:

  • Image Size – There are 3 image sizing options, each has its own Image Size specification
    • Fit to width (linkable): image width of 1,080 pixels
    • Fit to width (tap to expand): minimum image height of 1,080 pixels
    • Fit to height (tilt to pan): image height of 1,920 pixels. In this case if your image width is wider than the screen then users can tilt their phone to pan across the image from side to side.
  • Image ratio:  Images use the full width of the screen by default
  • File type: .PNG and .JPG
  • Number of photos: up to 20 photos can be used in a Canvas


Tilt-to-pan images

Tilt-to-pan feature allows you to upload images that are wider than screen, and people can tilt their phones to pan across the image from one side to another. This allows you to display full-height images in your Canvas ad. Here’s an example of tilt-to-pan images in canvas ad

Here are the image specs for a Canvas Ad tilt-to-pan photo:

  • Image height: 1,920 pixels
  • Image width: between 3,240 and 5,400 px (which is 3-5x the width of the screen)
  • Image ratio: Images use the full width of the screen by default
  • File type: .PNG and .JPG
  • Number of photos: up to 20 photos can be used in a Canvas



Canvas video allows you to show short full-screen video clips as a part of your Facebook Ads, when users interact with your brand’s content.

Here’s an example of a video in a Canvas Ad.

Here are the Canvas Ad video specs:

  • Format: .MOV or .MP4 file type
  • Length: keep the collective run time of all videos in the Canvas under 2 minutes total
  • Resolution: at least 720p
  • Orientation: portrait (landscape-oriented videos will automatically resize to portrait)
  • Thumbnail: this will be the first frame of the video

You can also captions in your video so that people can engage with your video, even if they have their audio turned off.



Carousel component allows you to show 2-10 images in your Canvas Ad, that users can swipe left and right to scroll. Each image can link to a different page. Each image occupies full screen width. Here’s an example of Carousel component in a Canvas Ad:

Here are the specifications for Canvas Ad Carousel Images:

  • Image size: 1,080 pixels (maximum width) x 1,920 pixels (maximum height)
  • Image ratio: Images can be full or partial height, but all images should be the same size
  • File type: .PNG or .JPG
  • Number of images: 10 images per carousel max

Ensure that all the images used in a carousel are of the same size, else they will be cropped to the size of your first image.


Text Block

Text Block is a simple block of text you can show in your Canvas Ad to add more context to your Ad and tell people more about your products & services. Here’s an example of what a ext block looks in a canvas ad

Here are the Ad Specs for the text block in a canvas ad

  • Text: 500 characters max
  • Font size: 6 point up to 72 point
  • Font color: Customizable (#rrggbb)
  • Font style: Bold, italic or underlined (must be applied to the entire text block, not individual words)
  • Font alignment: Left, center or right
  • Font options: Serif or Sans Serif


Each canvas ad must have at least 1 call-to-action (CTA) button linked to an external URL where you’d like to send visitors. The canvas editor has built-in features to help you quickly create custom CTA buttons. Here’s an example of how a canvas button looks like

Here are the design specs for a Canvas Ad button:

  • Height: 48 pixels with 48 pixels of padding above and below
  • Text: 30 characters max
  • Options: Serif or Sans Serif



The header component allows you to pin an image such as logo to the top of the screen. Here’s an example of how a header looks like in a canvas ad (highlighted by red box)
